Nestled in the Swift Current River Valley, the village of Waldeck sits just 18 kilometres northeast of the city of Swift Current along the Trans-Canada Highway. It falls within the Rural Municipality of Excelsior No. 166 and Census Division No. 7, making it part of a broader agricultural region in south-central Saskatchewan. The Swift Current Creek runs through the area, and it is along those banks that willows once grew in abundance – a detail that likely inspired the community’s name. Waldeck is a German word meaning “Wooded Corner,” a fitting description for a settlement shaped by both its landscape and its people.
The land around Waldeck was opened for settlement by the Canadian Government in 1903, covering a tract stretching from Swift Current Creek to Herbert. Among the earliest arrivals were Rev. Klaas Peters and Abram Klassen, who came to the area in 1908. The village formally incorporated on December 23, 1913. The majority of residents in and around Waldeck trace their roots to Mennonite ancestry, a heritage that has shaped the character of the community over generations. One notable piece of trivia connected to the area is that Elon Musk worked on a farm near Waldeck after arriving in Canada from South Africa in the late 1980s. As of the 2021 Census, Waldeck had a population of 294 people living in 114 of its 119 private dwellings, a growth of 6.1% from the 277 residents recorded in 2016. The village covers a land area of 1.99 square kilometres, with a population density of approximately 147.7 people per square kilometre.
