Welwyn Map

Tucked into the southeastern corner of Saskatchewan, not far from the Manitoba border, Welwyn sits within the Rural Municipality of Moosomin No. 121. The community covers a compact land area of just 0.64 square kilometres, and in the 2016 Census recorded a population of 133 residents living in 61 private dwellings. That figure represented a modest decline from the 135 people counted in the 2011 Census, reflecting a population density of roughly 207.8 persons per square kilometre. The name Welwyn was drawn from Welwyn in Hertfordshire, England, a suggestion credited to James Wake, a homesteader who had settled just over the Manitoba border.

Welwyn first incorporated as a village on June 11, 1907, a status it held for over a century before restructuring on May 1, 2018, at which point it relinquished village status to become a special service area under the RM of Moosomin No. 121. Just north of the community, approximately 1.6 kilometres away in the neighbouring Rural Municipality of Rocanville No. 151, lies Welwyn Centennial Regional Park. Built entirely by volunteers in 1967 to mark Canada’s centennial, the park sits on the south shore of a mile-long reservoir along Beaver Creek and offers camping, swimming, picnicking, boating, and hiking through a forest of native oak trees.
