Windthorst Map

Tucked along Highway 48 in southeastern Saskatchewan, Windthorst is a small village that falls within the Rural Municipality of Chester No. 125 and Census Division No. 5. The community has a compact footprint, covering just 1.34 square kilometres of land, and recorded a population density of roughly 145 residents per square kilometre in the most recent census. Those numbers reflect a modest but stable rural settlement that has been part of the Saskatchewan landscape for well over a century.

Windthorst officially became an incorporated village on August 21, 1907, giving it a history that stretches back to the early years of the province itself. Its population has shifted gradually over recent decades – the 2011 census counted 215 residents, which edged down slightly to 211 by 2016, and further to 194 by the 2021 Census of Population conducted by Statistics Canada. Of its 123 total private dwellings recorded in 2021, 100 were occupied. On the sporting side, the community is home to an ice rink where the Kipling/Windthorst Oil Kings compete as part of the senior men’s Big 6 Hockey League, offering local residents a connection to the region’s strong hockey culture.
