Positioned roughly midway between Saskatoon and Yorkton along the Yellowhead Highway, Wynyard sits about 190 kilometres east of Saskatoon and 132 kilometres west of Yorkton in eastern Saskatchewan. The town falls within the boundaries of the Rural Municipality of Big Quill No. 308 and lies just to the south of Big Quill Lake, the largest saline lake in Canada. Little Quill Lake is also nearby, and the Mud Lake Wildlife Refuge is within 19 kilometres of town, making the surrounding area notable for its natural water features.
History and Settlement
The earliest settlers to arrive around Big Quill Lake were largely of Icelandic origin. They established a community they called the Vatnabyggd settlement, centred on a store and post office known as Sleipnir, which operated at NE 30-22-15 W2 before relocating into Wynyard in 1908. Ukrainian settlers arrived in a second wave, followed by British, Polish, and German families who contributed further to the area’s growth. Three heritage properties in town reflect this layered history: the Wynyard Court House, built in 1927; the Canadian Pacific Railway Station, completed in 1909; and the Wynyard Federated Church, which dates to 1921. A local museum on Avenue B holds a selection of historical artefacts and photographs from the region, along with occasional special exhibits.
Community Life and Population
According to the 2021 Census, Wynyard had a population of 1,724 people living in 808 of its 911 private dwellings. This represented a decline of about 4.1 percent from the 2016 figure of 1,798 residents. The town covers a land area of 5.32 square kilometres, giving it a population density of approximately 324 people per square kilometre. Despite the modest population dip, the community supports a wide range of organised activities. Sports teams include the Wynyard Blues men’s fastball team and the Wynyard Monarchs, who compete in both the Long Lake Hockey League and the senior men’s Highway Hockey League. The Wynyard Golf Club runs a nine-hole course and hosts several tournaments throughout the season. Families and youth are served by groups such as Wynyard Air Cadets, Wynyard Minor Baseball, and Wynyard Minor Hockey. The Wynyard Stingrays Synchronized Swimming Team trains at the local swimming pool. Community organisations including the Wynyard Kinsmen, Wynyard Kinettes, Wynyard Legion, and Wynyard Shriners round out the town’s social fabric. Local news is covered by the Wynyard Advance Gazette, and residents can tune into 107.5 Bolt FM, broadcast from nearby Humboldt. Wynyard Regional Park, about 2.4 kilometres south of Highway 16 on Highway 640, provides camping facilities for visitors to the area.
